Cusco Bike and Hike 8 Days

ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate to Strenuous

This short program combines 2 biking days in the Sacred Valley Surroundings, with 2 great  days of hiking in the mountains of the Sacred Valley and the must visit to Machu Picchu Sanctuary.  A great adventure for sports loving people

Day 1: CUSCO
Upon arrival in Cusco, you will be transferred to your hotel and will have the rest of the morning free to acclimate.   In the afternoon, a combined city and nearby ruins tour will educate you on the history of this astonishing town, while visiting its Incan and Colonial monuments. (B)

Day 2: CUSCO/ SACRED VALLEY
Moray & Maras
Pick up from your hotel in a private vehicle to be driven to the village of Chinchero, where we start our cross country bike ride. Passing the lagoon of Huaypo we´ll arrive at the Archaeological Park of Moray, a pre-Columbian agricultural laboratory, were we will appreciate a perfect union between archaeology and nature. This part of the ride is very attractive because of its permanent ups and downs. Continuing our trip, we arrive at Maras where a tasty picnic will be waiting for us.  After lunch, we continue riding to the salt pans below Maras and then head downhill  for approximately 40 minutes to the Sacred Valley (Pichingoto, Tarabamba), where we end our exuberating day ride. Our transport will take us to our hotel in the Sacred Valley.  Breakfast, lunch & dinner included. (B, L, D)

Day 3: SACRED VALLEY - LARES
Lares Mountain Pass and Calca
After breakfast, we travel for about an hour and a half to the pass leading to the valley of Lares, where we will start our bike ride heading east, in the direction of the cloud forest. Mostly downhill, we will bike along a clear dirt road and its shortcuts, which will take us to the village of Lares. We will enjoy an amazing descent, with a view of Mt. Pitusiray through a large pine forest, as we follow the meandering stream of Acchahuata. Picnic lunch on route and eventual arrival to our campsite, in the middle of a narrow and misty Valley, were we will enjoy of the medicinal and relaxing Hot Springs as well as of a nutritious dinner. Day 4: LARES HOT SPRINGS - IPSAYCOCHA
After packing up our camp and taking an additional dip in the hot springs, we start our ascent to the highland village of Huacahuasi (3,600m/11,800ft), where we have lunch. This is an authentic Andean Community where you observe their colorful distinct and colorful weavings. After lunch we continue climbing steadily, traversing through a treeless landscape of beautiful plants and flowers with roaming herds of llamas and alpacas. After about 21/2 hours we will reach the Ipsayccasa Pass (4,500m/ 14,760ft) and take in the breathtaking views of Mount Veronica (5,750m/18,864ft) and the surrounding snow-capped peaks.  Then we will descend to the Ipsaycocha Lake and enjoy the Andean Geese, Puna Ibis and other water birds. We will camp here here. (B, L, D)

Day 5: IPSAYCOCHA – OLLANTAYTAMBO - MACHU PICCHU
Today we continue descending to the village of Patacancha (3,700m/ 12,139ft), a well-known textile community and where the people still preserve their ancient Quechua customs. This will be our lunch spot. Then we continue to Ollantaytambo through the valley where we can appreciate the vast archeological remains and a wide variety of flowers and bird species. We will then take the train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes in the evening and spend the night there in a comfortable accommodation. (B, L, D)

Day 6: MACHU PICCHU / CUSCO
After an early breakfast, we take a half hour bus ride up to Machu Picchu for a guided visit through different sectors of the hill-top citadel, with astonishing views, listening to stories that will take you back in time.
You have the opportunity for an in depth tour of this world renowned site before returning to Cusco, giving you a chance to experience the spectacular views without other tourists in your pictures.  Optional hike up to the top of Wayna Picchu (Young Mountain) has to be previously booked at an extra cost.  Return by train to Cusco.  (B)

DAY 7: CUSCO DAY AT LEISURE
Today is a free day in the Incan Imperial Capital. We’ll do our best to discover Cusco’s enchanting network of narrow streets and white wash mud-brick walls, all built atop Incan stone foundations. A true amalgamation of cultures! Explore the many markets, churches, museums, plazas and first-rate restaurants, all at your fingertips while exploring the city center on foot.
More active options include river rafting, hiking in the surroundings of Cusco and mountain biking. (B)

Day 8: CUSCO/OUT
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Lima or to continue with an extension program. Assistance can be provided.  (B)
